Our school provides for the educational needs of girls and boys from Junior Infants to 1st class and for girls from 2nd to 6th class. An integral part of our school community is Our Orchard, which consists of five specialised classes for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder – from pre-school to 6th class.
Our Mission Statement
Our aim is to create a welcoming school, committed to educating children in a caring environment in partnership with the community.
We’re very lucky to have small class sizes with ratios of 14:1 in some cases. We aim to provide a truly inclusive environment in which the unique skills of all children can be met. When it comes to learning, we have a very dedicated team of teachers working tirelessly to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Where assistance is required, we have both Maths Recovery and Reading Recovery teachers. Our learning support team also use the most up-to-date teaching methodologies to facilitate Maths Blast, Team Teaching and Station Teaching wherever possible in the classroom. These programmes provide the children with access to small learning groups which ensure they’re working at a pace best suited to their learning style.
We believe that inclusion is of the upmost importance and that the school environment should reflect and respect the diversity of the broader community. Children from all countries, race and creed are welcome at our school and we also encourage active participation by their parents in school activities. In line with our policy on inclusion, the children in Our Orchard are integrated into our mainstream classes wherever possible and we have seen the benefits that this can bring to the school as a whole.
Our facilities include a computer room, senior and junior libraries, a cooking room, a music room and a large school hall. We understand the importance of technology for today’s generation and all of our classrooms have interactive whiteboards with the latest in teaching software. Our computer lab has 12 desktop computers, allowing for whole class IT teaching and ensuring that all our children leave primary school with basic computer literacy skills. Outside, we have two basketball/tennis courts and access to an all-weather pitch at our local GAA club, Craobh Chiarain.
The children also get to enjoy a number of extra-curricular activities both during the school day and after school including drama, dance and football. We’re also very proud of our school choir who have been invited to participate in a number of public performances within the community, such as turning on of the Christmas lights in Killester and the Córfeile.
Our School Completion Programme allows us to run homework clubs in which the children not only get supervision and support while doing their homework, but they also have the opportunity to learn new skills such as knitting, set dancing, cooking and Scratch Programming.
It’s very important to us that our parents feel welcome and included within our school environment. Our magnificent new Parents Room provides parents with a space to call their own within the school. Our Home School Liaison programme encourages parents to get involved in fun school activities with their children as well as providing classes and activities just for parents. Our active Parents Association works to organise events throughout the school year, fundraising for new equipment, activities and trips for the children.
